Chapter Five

A loud jarring noise shattered the silence, waking Jane from her erotically-enhanced dream state! It was a low, rhythmic, humming sound that droned on and on, never stopping. How the hell could one noise get on so many nerves at the same time? she wondered sleepily.

Groaning, she turned over to push Victor onto his side to stop his snoring, but instead found his side of the bed empty. It felt cold too, like he hadn’t been there for some time.

Opening one cautious, bleary eye, she looked at the other side of the bed – nope, it was definitely empty! But if Victor wasn’t here snoring, then what on earth was that racket?

Glancing around the darkened room, she tried to track down the din that was clamoring for her attention, gasping in surprise when she found the culprit – it was her cell phone alarm going off, telling her it was six a.m.! No wonder Victor wasn’t there; he was probably already at the shop, baking his bread.

She turned the alarm off and dived into the shower quickly, going through her usual work day routine, although she did take extra care with her personal appearance, just for her mate. She felt a warm glow blossom inside of her at the thought of Victor… her bonded mate.

She was just about to get dressed when there was a knock at the door, so she quickly threw on her robe. “Who is it?” she asked, walking over to stand in front of the door.

“It’s Ray,” the wolf shifter replied. “I hope you don’t mind, but I overheard you and Victor last night saying about you going to help him in the shop today. It’s just that the kitchen isn’t usually open this early for breakfast, but I went and made you some anyway on my own. Would you like me to bring it in or leave it out here until you’re ready?”

She opened the door immediately, beaming at Ray as she exclaimed, “Oh, that is so kind of you! Thank you. Please, bring it in.” She held the door open for him and he rolled the room service trolley in. “How did you know I’d be up at this time?” she asked, a confused expression on her face.

“Ah…” Ray flushed slightly before continuing, “…well, your alarm is a bit… strident… I heard it from downstairs.” He shuffled his feet uncomfortably. “It’s only because I have enhanced senses as a shifter, though; normal humans wouldn’t have heard it.” He smiled gingerly. “Just leave the trolley in the room when you’ve finished and my niece will take it out when she comes around to clean the rooms later,” he told her hurriedly as he backed out of the room.

“Oops!” replied Jane before he could go. “I’m sorry, Ray – I didn’t even realize it was set for this morning,” she apologized. “I’ll make sure to turn it down a bit for tomorrow. I suppose it was lucky Victor had already left by the time it went off!” She noticed Ray’s nose twitch at her words.
